Pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency is an autosomal recessive, inherited disease with multiple serious effects on the animal’s health. PK is an enzyme needed for normal energy production by the red blood cells. Its deficiency causes anemia and weakness, liver failure, abnormal bone density, heart murmur and shortened life expectancy.

Study of the PK gene in normal and affected Basenis revealed the specific mutation causing this disease. A DNA-based genetic test uses this information to identify dogs that are affected, carrier or normal.

The “recessive” table shows the expected results from breeding dogs of each genetic status. It is important never to breed two carrier dogs, because on average 25% of the pups could be affected. One parent should always be clear/normal for the disease.
